Tyson Miller
Director, SEE Innovation, Green Press Initiative
Tyson has been developing innovative programs for the past 15 years. He is currently the founder and director of Dream of a Nation and the Green Press Initiative—national efforts designed to advance public awareness of critical issues and improve the ecological footprint of publishing and the paper industry at large. Earlier in his career, he was heavily involved in media efforts -while still an undergraduate student at UCLA, he co-produced and co-directed an award winning documentary, Generation Earth, to spread the successes of environmental education programs around the country. It received four stars from the National Science Teachers Association and has been seen by nearly 1 million students. His programs have been awarded by the U.S. EPA, Association of Environmental Professionals, and California Governor’s Office and featured in the NY Times, USA Today, NPR, BBC, ABC News, Chicago Tribune, and many other outlets. Publishers Weekly recently named Tyson “One of the 50 Most Influential People Under 40” in the U.S. book industry.

Erin Johnson
Associate Director, Green Press Initiative, Development Coordinator, SEE Innovation
Erin graduated from Ithaca College in 1972 with a BA in Drama. She has worked in the publishing world for nearly 25 years. Being a part of the Green Press Initiative fulfills one of her life’s passions—to advance environmental stewardship in society. She conducts small publisher and printer outreach and provides implementations assistance. She also engages in tasks related to communications and publicity. She is a strong advocate for sustainable agriculture and also works on watershed protection issues.

Todd Pollak
Project Manager, Green Press Initiative, Website & Research Manager, SEE Innovation
Todd graduated from the University of Michigan's Program in the Environment where he focused largely on climate change, and techniques businesses can employ to minimize environmental impacts. Prior to working for the Green Press Initiative, Todd taught and coordinated environmental education programs at the Leslie Science and Nature Center in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Todd has also completed internships with several environmental non-profit organizations, including INFORM, Inc. which aims to identify and promote more sustainable business practices.

Shannon Binns
Program Manager, Green Press Initiative, Greening the Media
Shannon joined the Green Press Initiative in October of 2007 and leads our newspaper, policy and greening the media programs. Shannon brings a unique perspective having worked for a number of private and nonprofit organizations. Most recently, he supported conservation goals at The Nature Conservancy as part of a team that worked with Congress to develop science-based climate change legislation. Prior to that he helped organize the Global Roundtable on Climate Change at the Earth Institute, which brought together executives from industry to formulate a joint statement calling for public policies to address climate change. In the private sector, Shannon has worked as a manufacturing engineer with Motorola, General Motors, and Trane. He has also served as an agroforestry extension agent with the Peace Corps in Senegal, a communications manager for North Andaman Tsunami Relief in Thailand, and an English teacher in Prague. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering from Iowa State University and a Master of Public Administration in Environmental Science and Policy from Columbia University.

Kelly Spitzner
Communications Coordinator, Green Press Initiative, Design Director, Dream of a Nation
After graduating from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a degree in Psychology and Art, Kelly got her first taste of the exciting world of publishing at a small company creating fresh resources for kids, teachers and families—positive hip hop anyone? Before joing the SEE Innovation team, Kelly worked on the 2008 Presidential Election, which brought her all over of the country, educating and organizing voters around environmental and social issues. Kelly is the lead designer for Dream of a Nation and works with GPI to increase issue and program visibility in the mainstream and trade presses. She is also working to generate diverse revenue streams through the expansion of GPI’s membership program.

Gretel Hakanson
Associate Editor, Dream of a Nation
Gretel joined the Dream of a Nation editorial team in February of 2010. Prior to that she served as an in house editor for nine books on the topics of sustainability and green building. She also worked as an editorial freelancer for five years for various publications after working in the trenches at Amazon.com as web developer for three years. She graduated from Indiana University with a B.A. in Journalism and now lives in Tucson Arizona in a net-zero electricity historic home.

Casey Bass
Design Associate, Dream of a Nation
Casey is a recent graduate from the University of Wisconsin- Madison, where she received a degree in art, with a concentration in graphic design. She was lucky enough to join the Dream of a Nation project shortly after graduating, working as one of the graphic designers for the book. Casey has loved being a part of the Dream of a Nation team, and is very excited to be a part of such an important effort. Every day working on the project brings something new, and Casey has been eager to share the social, environmental and economic information she learns about the U.S. with her family and friends. In addition to working on the Dream of a Nation project, Casey is completing a design internship with a women’s magazine in Madison, WI.

Allen Law
Associate Editor, Dream of a Nation
Allen is currently studying political science with an emphasis on environmental and social justice – a perfect fit with his research for the Dream of a Nation book – at Allegheny College. He is active on campus and in the community, working on initiatives to support Fair Trade products, start a car-sharing program, and build more solar energy systems in the town of Meadville. After graduation he hopes to eventually continue his studies in the social sciences, though, like most college students, he’s unsure of where to go from here.
